Welcome to Diablo

Diablo, CA, is 1.4 square miles in Contra Costa county at the base of Mount Diablo. A post office was established in 1916. The community of Diablo has a great history dating back to the 1800s. This area was ranchland for many years. In the early 1900s that changed.

In 1912 Robert Noble Burgess (Burgess, hmmm.... we see the connection to our real estate team! ) purchased ranchland in what we now know as Diablo and transformed it into a luxury summer resort. This became one of the first country clubs in California. Paul Burgess's long lost relative, Robert Noble Burgess, planned the club and community, which included a golf course, tennis courts, horsestables, a swimming pool, beaches around Diablo Lake and high-end homes often called ranch mansions.

Special electric trains brought visitors to the club and the local newspapers frequently featured articles about the parties and dances held here. It was definitely the place to be, and all the society pages of the time confirmed that!

Sadly, World War I brought an end to the Burgess enterprises and seven years after the development of Diablo Robert Noble Burgess dissolved his business and sold his home. But he did leave his mark on Diablo and on the East Bay. Although Diablo is no longer the only country club in the valley, it has a beautiful and rich history which makes it a highly desirable community to live in.
